All Standards English Language Arts History and Social Science Common Sense For Teachers

This is an important message from the game designer regarding the educational merit and value of Modern Command, and text-based microworlds in general.

Hi there.

I've been a teacher for over three years, and been in education for about 6 years. I have a Master's Degree in Education, and am licensed as a Massachusetts Instructional Technology Specialist. I'm a computer geek and an education geek.

I've heard plenty of talk and unfilled promises of technological revolution and the role technology can play in education.

And I think most of it is utter nonsense.

The effective use of technology in education depends on three things:

1) The relationship of the teacher to the technology
2) Effective and real in-class support for technology use
3) Relevant and real connections between content and the technology.

Modern Command is a positive, exciting and useful learning tool; I want to be clear, though, that Modern Command is a game first.

It's designed to be a fun, enjoyable, challenging, and rewarding place. It's also a great place to learn about the world, and how the world works.

The text-based, multiplayer environment enables students to use the canvas of their imaginations to create and participate in a world where it they are free to "try it their way".

And if they learn a little bit, and have some fun while doing it...well...that's not a bad day's work.
