This is an important message from the game designer regarding the educational merit and value of Modern Command, and
text-based microworlds in general.
Hi there.
I've been a teacher for over three years, and been in education for about 6 years. I have a Master's Degree in Education, and
am licensed as a Massachusetts Instructional Technology Specialist. I'm a computer geek and an education geek.
I've heard plenty of talk and unfilled promises of technological revolution and the role technology can play in
education.
And I think most of it is utter nonsense.
The effective use of technology in education depends on three things:
1) The relationship of the teacher to the technology
2) Effective and real in-class support for technology use
3) Relevant and real connections between content and the technology.
Modern Command is a positive, exciting and useful learning tool; I want to be clear, though, that Modern Command is a game
first.
It's designed to be a fun, enjoyable, challenging, and rewarding place.
It's also a great place to learn about the world, and how the world works.
The text-based, multiplayer environment enables students to use the canvas of their imaginations to create and participate in
a world where it they are free to "try it their way".
And if they learn a little bit, and have some fun while doing it...well...that's not a bad day's work.
